How to Deal with a Clogged Drain

If your kitchen or bathroom sink clogs, you’ll know right away. There are plenty of products you can purchase to aid in the removal of clogs. Here are some simple, natural and cost saving ways of dealing with a clogged drain.

1. Boiling water – not hot water, but rather boiling water. Boiling water will have a better chance of dissolving organic matter that could be clog causing. **warning** Do not use boiling water if you have PVC pipes, the heat could cause plumbing joints to loosen. Also, do not pour directly onto a porcelain sink, as it could crack. Pour boiling water directly down the drain. Repeat if necessary.

2. Vinegar & Baking Soda – this option usually always works. Pour ½ box of Baking Soda down drain, next pour ½ cup of Vinegar, and cover the drain with the stopper, or a rag. Wait ½ hour, then pour boiling water down the drain.

3. Plunger – if your sink is completely clogged, and no liquid will flow through, you will need to use a plunger. Remove metal strainers in kitchen sink, fill sink half way with water, place plunger over drain with a firm seal. Use sharp, fast plunges to remove the clog. Check to see if the sink is draining.

4. Small Drain Snake – can be purchased from your local hardware store. This a long spring steel wire that ‘snakes’ into drains. When it comes in contact with a clog, they can be twisted and remove the debris.

5. Call a Plumber – allow the professional plumbers if the above doesn’t work for you.

Keep your drains well maintained so that you don’t run into clogged drains. Keep covers over drains to catch food or hair, to prevent clogs.

Run hot water down the drain after each use. No need to use boiling water, just hot water to wash away any fresh buildup.

Add a few shakes of Baking Soda to your drains, and follow up with hot water or vinegar. This is a great way of removing odours, and is a natural cleaner for drains.
