Asbestos Containing Acoustic Ceiling Tiles

Some ceiling tiles and acoustic ceiling tiles manufactured before 1990 may contain asbestos particles.  These tiles can be found in both commercial and residential buildings throughout Canada.  Start by looking at the age of the building, or the date of ceiling tile installation, which may help you to determine if further testing is required.

If the tiles are old looking, discoloured, or in an older building, special handing and testing for asbestos is needed by a qualified technician.  Should the tiles contain asbestos, disturbing them could send dangerous particles throughout the building.  Older ceiling tiles will easily break, stirring up dust that could contain asbestos fibres.  It is very important for your health to not make a dusty mess or renovate an unknown area without taking proper precautions.  Of course, not all ceiling tiles contain asbestos fibres, but if it’s an older building, we would recommend you have them tested before proceeding with any removals.

There are other types of ceiling material that may contain high levels of asbestos including textured paint, textured panels, and spray-on popcorn ceiling.  Even using safety masks, HEPA vacuums will not contain all the airborne asbestos particles.  This is a job that must be handled by trained professionals who will make sure that all removals and disposal of materials is done correctly.
