Your Handy Home Checklist for an Okanagan Winter
We all know how those Okanagan winters can sneak up on us. Now is the time to begin preparing your home both indoors and out.
Your Handy Checklist:
- Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned.
- If you’ve been thinking about improving the insulation of your home now is a good time. Check insulation in your attic, walls and garage. Inspect your caulking and weather striping around doors and windows. You may also consider covering some of your windows with plastic or weather windows.
- Clean out your gutters to keep snow melt running freely
- Check your outdoor plumbing and insulate pipes especially in the attic, basement, crawl space and garage. Drain any outdoor water lines from swimming pools, garden hoses and sprinkler systems.
- May sure you don’t have any old overhanging branches close to your property that could break causing damage
- This is good time of the year to make sure your fire extinguishers are on hand and smoke detectors working correctly.
- Have rock salt or sand ready for your driveway and sidewalks
- Inspect your roof for any tiles that may have come loose of the summer and fall windstorms
- Dig out and dust off those snow shovels and snow removal equipment
- Don’t forget to reverse your ceiling fans they should rotate clockwise to push warm air back down into the room
- Service your furnace and water heater
- Use draft guards in front of doors that lead to an attached garage, multi-season room or patio
- Go over your family emergency plan including: short term emergency supplies, emergency kit and exit plan from the home
- May sure you have handy extra blankets, flashlights, candles and battery powered radio for power outages
