Fall Home Maintenance Tips

Fall is here in a matter of days, and now is the time to start planning your Fall home maintenance schedule.

Exterior

  • Check for Cracks in your home’s foundation, and seal them to prevent cold drafts from getting inside. Check for cracks near windows as this could be a welcome entry for unwanted critters like mice.
  • Check your roof for loose shingles and make necessary repairs before fall weather arrives. Get a start on cleaning your gutters of any nests or stray baseballs
  • Reinforce your doors and windows before cold weather hits. Add weather stripping to doors and windows to help prevent cool air from seeping inside, and your warm air escaping.
  • Trim trees and shrubs of any dead branches or decaying limbs that could be vulnerable to winds or become a hazard when they have snow on them.

Interior

  • Before you turn on the heat for the first time, replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, and check that your fire extinguishers have not expired.
  • Have your furnace annual check up done before the cold settles in, to catch any small furnace problems before it becomes a large, and expensive problem when the temperatures have dipped low.
  • Improve your attic and wall insulation. Cold drafts make your furnace work harder.
  • Last but not least…freshen up your stored quilts and winter blankets. Air out your blankets before the weather turns, and you cannot have them hanging outside to freshen up.
