Fire Prevention and Propane Safety Tips
Spring is a great time to go over your families fire safety tips and preparing for your barbecue season.
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, change batteries immediately if needed.
- Check your fire extinguishers for expiry dates and make sure they are in the best condition.
- Check all your power cords to make sure they are not overloaded or covered by furniture or area rugs
- Practice your family’s fire escape plan so everyone knows what to do including your exit strategies, pets and where to meet up after you leave the home.
- Check your windows to make sure they open and close easily in case they are needed for exiting.
- Make sure you don’t have newspapers, magazines or old materials stacking up that could be a fire hazard.
- Check your dryer vent and make sure it’s cleaned annually. Dry vents are one of the causing of fires in both homes and apartments.
- Make sure all your yard chemicals, paints and cleaning solutions are stored away from the house.
- Spring brings in barbecue season so make sure your grill is cleaned and serviced.
- Your barbecue should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Check the tank expiration date.
- Check the major connection points between the propane tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners.
- Before you turn on the grill check for leaks by using a soap water solution spraying it on the connections. Turn the tank on and if it has a propane leak it will bubble. Tighten the connections and test again.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Even though we all know grills are still very hot once turned off just make sure children and pets are not playing around the barbecue area.
- If outside and your clothing catch on fire remember to Stop, Drop and Roll.
