First Day of Spring with Fire Prevention and Propane Safety Tips

Fire Prevention and Propane Safety Tips

Spring is a great time to go over your families fire safety tips and preparing for your barbecue season.

  1. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, change batteries immediately if needed.
  2. Check your fire extinguishers for expiry dates and make sure they are in the best condition.
  3. Check all your power cords to make sure they are not overloaded or covered by furniture or area rugs
  4. Practice your family’s fire escape plan so everyone knows what to do including your exit strategies, pets and where to meet up after you leave the home.
  5. Check your windows to make sure they open and close easily in case they are needed for exiting.
  6. Make sure you don’t have newspapers, magazines or old materials stacking up that could be a fire hazard.
  7. Check your dryer vent and make sure it’s cleaned annually. Dry vents are one of the causing of fires in both homes and apartments.
  8. Make sure all your yard chemicals, paints and cleaning solutions are stored away from the house.
  9. Spring brings in barbecue season so make sure your grill is cleaned and serviced.
  10. Your barbecue should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  11. Check the tank expiration date.
  12. Check the major connection points between the propane tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners.
  13. Before you turn on the grill check for leaks by using a soap water solution spraying it on the connections. Turn the tank on and if it has a propane leak it will bubble.    Tighten the connections and test again.
  14. Never leave your grill unattended.
  15. Even though we all know grills are still very hot once turned off just make sure children and pets are not playing around the barbecue area.
  16. If outside and your clothing catch on fire remember to Stop, Drop and Roll.
