
Getting ready for an Okanagan winter and tips to save on your energy bills
It’s Time to Winterize Your Home
You never know what kind of winter is going to show up in the Okanagan Valley. We’ve seen super cold winters hitting -20 for weeks, heavy snow falls that never seem to end and milder winters delivering lots of rain. With daytime temperatures still mild, it is a perfect time to winterize your home.
- Have your furnace inspected, filter checked, and duct-work checked for leaks.
- Winterize you are A/C unit and remove any window-unit air conditioners.
- Make sure your gutters and downspouts are all clear ready for heavy rains
- Drain outside hoses and turn off taps in case of heavy freezing
- Wrap basement heating pipes
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Inspect your roof and replace any worn or missing shingles.
- It’s important to have your chimney inspected
- If you have a fireplace, close the damper when the fireplace is not in use.
- Seal off drafty windows and patio doors with clear plastic
- If you have an attic make sure the attic door is properly insulated
- Get back into the habit of turning off lights when they are not needed
- Use a programmable thermostat
- Consider installing storm doors and windows
- Lock door and windows for a tight seal
- Seal any electrical outlets and switches with foam insulators
- Replace old weather stripping around the doors and windows.
- Keep doors closed in unused rooms
- Move furniture off and away from heating vents
- Reverse ceiling fans
- Open blinds or drapes on sunny days
- Use the oven for baking during colder hours of the day to help heat your home.
- Keep energy costs down by lowering thermostat especially at night
- Consider insulation plastic on windows and outside doors that are not used
- Consider hanging thermal curtains to help prevent drafts.
- Add door sweepers
- Keep all closet doors closed when possible.
- Unplug any unused electronics
- If you haven’t done it already switch to energy-saving CFL bulbs
- Make sure your attic is properly vented to prevent any ice buildup on the roof
- Make sure that your garage is not too drafty
- Wear warm clothes inside to help reduce energy costs
- Seal any cracks in the foundation of your house
