Illegal Asbestos Dumping Very Dangerous
Not only is dumping of Asbestos illegal it’s highly dangerous in many ways.
Illegal dumping is a multi-million dollar problem in the Lower Mainland and there is growing concern as asbestos dumping becomes more common. Chris Gadsden of the Fraser Valley Illegal Dumping Alliance recently snapped a photo of an illegal dump site at the side of a rural Chilliwack road.
“It looked suspicious,” Gadsden told CTV News. Gadsden found about a dozen bags of trash in the Chilliwack River Valley. Some of the bags contained asbestos and had been ripped open. Chilliwack conservation officer Don Stahl said illegal dumping of bags containing asbestos can have severe consequences. “It is concerning because it is a hazardous waste. It can cause cancer when it becomes airborne, gets into your lungs,” he said.

Concerns for improper handling and dumping of asbestos
- Were the tradespeople who removed the asbestos protected from dangerous fibers?
- Was the removal done by people trained and qualified in handling asbestos? Most likely not, because they would not have dumped this dangerous material
- How was the asbestos cleaned up at the site? It’s very dangerous to dust, sweep, or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos
- Was every precaution taken to avoid damaging asbestos-containing material when removed?
- Was a power stripper, sander, drill or saw used in the removal process spreading the deadly fibers into the air
- Did the material break apart into small pieces? This could release asbestos fibers into the air.
- Was the material that could containing the asbestos tracked through the building? This material should have been contained and cleaned up by an asbestos professional.
- Are there still asbestos fibers in the location? This could be highly dangerous to other occupants, the homeowners family, trades people and visitors.
