Is Your Roof Healthy?
The roof of our homes and businesses are often forgotten about, yet the roof has a large role in protecting our belongings. Here are some tips on how to check in on the health of your roof. Each Spring and Fall is a great time to do a visual inspection.
Grab a pair of binoculars and from the ground, do a check of your roof to see if you spot any of these deficiencies:
- Cracked, curling or missing shingles
- Wear around chimneys or other fixtures
- Unsecured drainage and downspouts that angle towards a foundation
- Rain gutters that are filled with leaves, nests or other types of debris
- Asphalt debris or granules in the gutter or on the ground
You may also check in your attic for signs of wear on your roof by looking for:
- Outside light coming through the roof
- Visible signs of water damage
- Sagging boards
It is the homeowners’ responsibility to know the health of your roof, and if repairs need to happen. If your roof is damaged by hail or wind, you are usually covered under your home insurance policy. This includes damaged caused by flying debris or falling branches/trees, or damaged to your home and contents from water entering through sudden openings caused by wind or hail.
