Dealing with frozen pipes
- In the kitchen, keep the doors open on the cabinets where you have pluming to circulate warm air around the pipes
- If you have water lines in the garage keep doors closed and if you have heat turn it on to around 12 degrees Celsius.
- If you did plan ahead and have water lines turned off outside it’s also a good idea to turn on the facets and let any water drip out slowly
- Keep the heat on in the home when you go out or turn in for the night.
- If you’re going away for the holidays keep the heat turned on around 12 – 15 degrees Celsius
- Turn the heat up on the property
- If you have a frozen pipe turn on the facet to start the flow of water. This will help the frozen pipe to melt the ice.
- Apply heat to the air that is frozen using a space heater, hair dryer or wrap hot towels around the affected area. Start the thawing process close to the faucet.
- Keep the heat on until water starts to flow. If this does not work you may need to call a plumber
- One water is flowing you should check all other lines in the home in case you have other frozen pipes.
- If possible wrap or insulate the area where it was frozen to prevent it from happening again.
- If a frozen water pipe does burst, the first thing you should do is shut off the main water line into your home. This will prevent additional water from flowing and damaging your home.
- If you cannot locate the frozen pipe call a plumber before it bursts and floods your home
