Prepping Your Property for Flooding

The Spring melt has begun.  With warm temperatures this week in the Okanagan and Kootenays, and possible rain this weekend, the snow pack will start melting quickly now.

After the extensive flooding last year, municipalities are preparing early this year for flooding.  The lake levels have been dropped significantly to accommodate the large snow accumulation we had this year, so lake front properties shouldn’t see much if any flooding this year.  The properties that are at risk, are the ones along the creeks and rivers.

What is the best way to protect your property and home from possible flooding?  Sandbags.  Sandbag stations have already been set up, and the production of sandbags is in full swing.  Last year a local news station had a report on how to properly create a sandbag wall.  Click here to watch that video.blank

Another great source of information is to go to the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations website.
