Stay Cool in the Extreme Heat

With another week of extreme heat, it’s important to know how to keep cool.

  • Wear loose-fitting, light coloured clothing.
  • Stay hydrated with WATER
  • Make meals that do not need to be cooked in an oven – try making a cold soup!
  • Close curtains and blinds during the day, block the sun with awnings.
  • If you have A/C set it to the highest setting were you are comfortable (between 22C-26C) this will reduce energy costs, and provide relief.
  • Take cool showers or baths until you feel refreshed.
  • blankUse a fan with air flow aimed at you to help you stay cool – better yet, place a shallow bowl with ice in front of the fan, and enjoy the coolness!
  • Have cold water in a spray bottle, and spray yourself, and allow the water to cool you as it evaporates.
  • Line dry cloths, no need for a clothes dryer when it’s just as hot outside.blank
  • Hand wash dishes, and allow them to air dry, no need to have the dishwasher heat up your home.
  • Spend time in a cool pace, such as the shopping mall, grocery store or public library.
  • Listen to the news on the radio or television to know what is happening with the weather and be aware of how long the heat wave will be lasting.
  • Check on your elderly neighbours and family to ensure that they too are keeping cool.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS IN VEHICLES DURING THIS EXTREME HEAT, EVEN IF IT’S JUST FOR A MOMENT.
