Common Causes of Water Pipe Failures:

1) Top of the list for the Okanagan would be freezing pipes. Proper water pipe maintenance saves homeowners thousands of dollars.  So before winter hits prepare your home and water pipes for a possible freeze.

2) Polybutylene piping – Commonly named Poly-B piping, used in the Okanagan from 1977. It was very popular because of its fast installation methods, low costs and flexibility.  The problem is usually at the joint where pipes are connected causing failure. The cause could be anything from chemical reactions or improper installation.

2) Tree Roots – Yes believe it or not tree roots can be the cause of a pipe failures.  Tree roots have a tendency to grow towards a water supply.  So if your aging pipes have a small leak a tree root will wrap themselves around the pipe.

3) Collapsed Pipes – This happens from settling or movement of your home.  If you have had recent construction or landscape work around the yard, nearby construction, blasting or even a small quake can cause a shift in the ground around your home.

4) Corrosion – Older pipes especially those made from steel can corrode and eventually fail causing a leak.  If you home was built prior to 1970 have your plumbing inspected for corrosion.

5) Water Pressure – A sudden change in water pressure can cause a breakdown in your pipes.  Even as simple as a clogged toilet, drain or pump failure can be the cause.

6) Extreme heat – If the ground starts drying up it could cause a shift in your plumbing and pipes.  This is becoming more common in places like California and Texas with the ground and water reservoirs drying up.
