You May Find Asbestos Under Your Toes
Today there are millions of homes with asbestos-containing materials, and only a fraction of homeowners are aware.
Asbestos flooring was very common in older homes, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. The popularity of household asbestos materials rose in the mid-20th century as the products were resistant to heat, fire, chemical, and biological breakdown. Also to simply find a use for asbestos waste product from asbestos mining operations. Unfortunately, this all started happening decades before scientists and researchers shed light on the adverse health effects of asbestos exposure.
Common asbestos-containing flooring types…
- Pre-1990’s 9″ vinyl or asphalt-based floor tiles
- Pre-1990’s 12″ tiles
- Pre-1990’s sheet linoleum
- Adhesive used to glue down flooring materials

What to do if you think you have asbestos in your home…
Asbestos is considered safe and legal to remain in homes or public buildings as long as the asbestos materials are in good condition and the asbestos cannot be released into the air. It is also impossible to identify asbestos without examination under a microscope, so sending a sample to a testing facility is the standard way of finding out. Call a professional asbestos abatement team for your best chance at minimal exposure.
However, always remember…
Asbestos-containing materials may release airborne asbestos fibers if they become: damaged, chipped, loosened, crumbly, worn down, sanded, cut, moved, sawed, drilled, repaired, removed improperly, OR subject to high volumes of foot traffic, abrasive cleaning, or maintenance procedures (floor buffing machine, corrosive chemicals, etc).
